Our eyes act as a window to the world, making them essential to enjoy the finer things in life, including appreciating a scenic view or watching our favorite movie.

However, we often take our eyes for granted. Consequently, if we don’t take care of them adequately, it can lead to having to wear spectacles or even lead to irreversible vision loss.

So, to inform you of how to preserve your vision, Opsis Eye Care has put together a beginner’s guide to taking care of your eyesight. Through this guide, you will feel confident that you’re maintaining healthy eyes.

Getting Started
Eat healthy foods:
Add fruits and vegetables to every meal, including kale, spinach, carrots, and blueberries. Eating fish is also recommended to improve eyesight.

Take screen breaks: If you use a computer for work, remember to rest your eyes every twenty minutes by looking away for twenty seconds at an object twenty feet away. Also, take regular breaks from your smartphone.

Go outdoors: Exposure to outside light prevents Myopia (nearsightedness).

Invest in sunglasses: When outdoors, it’s essential to wear a good pair of sunglasses that protects your eyes from UV radiation. It will reduce the risk of Cataracts and Macular degeneration.

Next Steps
Book regular eye exams:
It’s crucial to take your family to an optometrist from the age of six months old and up. Make sure to book in advance and ask for a reminder so you won’t forget to visit.

Select an expert Optometrist: An experienced optometrist will check your prescription and your eye health. Consequently, they will be able to advise you on how to take care of your eyes correctly.

Advanced procedures: Keep in mind that vision tests alone may not be enough, and a thorough examination of your retina and ocular structures may be necessary for the early detection of eye diseases.

Advice From The Pros
Be proactive:
It’s best to check your eyes annually or every other year depending on the age and condition of your eyes. Your Optometrist will advise the appropriate schedule for your eye exams.

Keep in mind that eye diseases progress slowly, so if you wait too long to check your eyes and have started to notice changes to your eyesight, there may already be permanent vision loss.

Contact lens care: If you wear contact lenses, it’s crucial to follow cleaning procedures and replacement schedules. Inappropriate use of contact lenses will cause infections and permanent damage to the eyes, leading to vision loss. Therefore, don’t sleep or swim while wearing them.

Quick recap: Remember prevention is better than cure, so eat healthily, take breaks at screens, and always wear sunglasses outdoors even when it’s cloudy as UV filters through.
